Taxonomic remark Quoy & Gaymard: where they "listed it as
"CHONDRACANTHE LISSE. — Chondracanthus levis N." with the "CHONDRACANTHE LISSE" part seeming to be a common name meaning "smooth chondracanthid" and "Chondracanthus levis" being the intended binomial. " They use the same format for other species elsewhere in the text.

When he established Sphyrion, Cuvier (1830) referred only to "Chondracanthe lisse" of Q and G - which is the common name, not the binomen.

Guerin-Meneville was the first to use the name Sphyrion laevigatus.

According to Wilson's (1919) review of the family:
Guerin-Meneville translated the French 'lisse' into the latin equivalent laevigatus.
Stebbing (1900) changed the gender of the specific name to agree with that of the genus, making it laevigatum.
Wilson included in his list of synonyms of S. laevigatum, both Steenstrup's (1869) and Thor's (1900) use of Sphyrion laevis (note different spelling).

What to conclude? Well, the current situation is messy and needs fixing! I would propose to:

Remove Chondracanthus lisse from the list of scientific names in World of Copepods/WoRMS, it should be considered a vernacular name for Chondracanthus levis.
consider Chondracanthus levis as the original name (basionym) for Sphyrion laevigatus.

The bad news is that I cannot see why the valid name for this taxon is not Sphyrion levis (Quoy & Gaymard, 1824). Unusually for the time (1824) there is no real doubt over the identity of Quoy & Gaymard's species. Their one illustration of this distinctive species is identifiable and their description is validly published.

Personally, I consider that there is little to be gained for resurrecting a name that hasn't been used since 1900 to replace a well known and regularly used name. There are provisions in the Code to allow for suppressing unused names in the interest of nomenclatural stability, but to resolve this would require a nomenclatural act which needs a publication (we can't yet do this in WoRMS). [details]

Taxonomy Chondracanthus levis Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 is the original name for this taxon. It was transferred to Sphyrion by Cuvier (1830) who referred to it only by its common name Chondracanthe lisse. It was Guerin-Meneville who first used the combination Sphyrion laevigatus for this taxon. The latter name is widely used but the name levis appears to have priority. This nomenclatural issue remains to be resolved. [details]
