The assignment of finnmarchicus to Gadus is a logical consequence of both the move of chalcogrammus to Gadus and the low genetic difference evidenced by comparative molecular studies of the 2 species.
It is not clear yet if the two species are synonyms (there are some morphological differences, but maybe not related to speciation), but even if they are, they are likely sister-species among the genus Gadus. [details]
