Identification Pulitzer-Finali (1986) assigned this variety (of which there is only a description, but no extant material, nor is there an image of its habitus) to Callyspongia, raising its status to species in the combination of Callyspongia simplex. Apart from the lack of firm evidence for this taxon, the combination Callyspongia simplex (Duch. & Mich., 1864) is a senior homonym for the well known East Atlantic species C. simplex Burton, 1956.
