Nomenclature In an alternative view Pettibone (1996) followed by (Barnich & Fiege (2003) have Nereis squamosa Delle Chiaje, 1827 as junior to Polynoe astericola Delle Chiaje, 1841, with Acholoe astericola as the valid name combination. This appears to be because Delle Chiaje used Polynoe astericola [new name], probably so as "not to be confused with Savigny's name of squamosa" (Pettibone, 1996:635) when both were in Polynoe (secondary homonymy). However there is no such name as Polynoe squamosa as Savigny (in Lamarck) spelled the name Polynoe squamata. Delle Chiaje's (1841) use of Polynoe 'squamosa' Savigny (he has 'squamata' alongside) is a misspelling, and there was no secondary homonymy. Nereis squamosa appears to be an available name, and Acholoe squamosa is the valid name combination as used by Chambers & Muir (1997). Pettibone (1996) cites McIntosh (1900:399) in support of usage of Acholoe astericola, but he only said "It has been thought best to retain the specific name astericola subsequently given to it by the Italian author, the original one of squamosa being less characteristic." [details]
