Taxonomic remark G. medius represents one of the most widely reported and taxonomically confused Gyrodactylus species. The identity of this species as intended by Kathariner (1895) is unclear, but modern usage has stabilised on a species infecting Cyprinus carpio. The taxon referred to as G. medius by Sproston (1946) and Srivastrava & James (1967) from Ciliata mustela is certainly a different species and is not included here.
The latter likely accounts for the marine record. (DIG) [details]
