Identification Prymnesium calathiferum may be separated from the other species of Prymnesium by several features. Firstly, P. calathiferum has elaborate wicker-basket-like external scales which are unique to this species, and secondly, it has the greatest ratio of flagellar to cell length (2.1-3.0) and the lowest ratio of haptonema to flagella length (0.16) of all known Prymnesium species (Chang and Ryan, 1985). [details]
