Nomenclature Specific epithet pre-occupied by Mayer, 1858; Briart & Cornet, 1873, in themselves possibly pre-occupied by Röding, 1798.

Tate (1897:41) proposed the name Turritella oxyacris as replacement name referring to Mayer, 1868 [in error for 1858] and is therefore considered an unnecessary replacement name.
Where the pro-occupation by Mayer and Briart & Cornet is clear, the issue of Epitonium acutum Röding, 1798 - with reference to Turbo duplicatus Linnaeus, 1758 as listen by Gmelin, 1791 - is currently under examination by the taxonomical editor. [details]
