Description Cells are oval in valve view (30–40 μm long and 20–25 μm wide), subovate, and convex in side view. The periflagellar area is located in a depression in the right valve. The cells show an apical spine with a curved shape. The valve surface of mature cells is rugose, covered by poroids. The valves show two types of pores. The small pores (~0.2 μm in diameter) are circular and unevenly distributed along the valve. No clumps of small pores were observed in the apical margins of the valve. There are 80–100 trichocyst pores in each valve, some unevenly distributed and most of them forming tangential rows. There are 8–12 rows of 3–6 trichocyst pores in depressed furrows in the margin of the anterior and medium parts of the valve. There is a row of four trichocyst pores in the right valve adjacent to the periflagellar area. [details]
Harmful effect As long as species identities in the Prorocentrum mexicanum species complex are not unambiguously resolved records of toxicity can not reliable related to a species name.
In Steidinger & Meave del Castillo (2018) P. steidingerae is recorded to be toxic in the Gulf of Mexico. [details]
Taxonomic remark Further studies of the species complex (P. mexicanum, P. rhathymum, P. steidingeae) are needed to clarify species delimitations and synonymy. [details]
