Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, isopolar, usually irregularly coiled, sometimes entangled in small microscopic clusters...
Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, isopolar, usually irregularly coiled, sometimes entangled in small microscopic clusters (colonies up to 600 μm in diameter), rarely in ± regular, screw-like formations, often in fragments, clearly constricted at the cross-walls, with indistinct amorphous mucilage, not attenuated towards ends. Cells spherical, pale blue-green or yellowish, hemispherical after division, (2.5) 4-7 (8.3) μm in diameter; apical cells spherical, of the same size and shape as the vegetative cells. Heterocytes more or less spherical or ellipsoidal, usually slightly larger than vegetative cells, intercalary, solitary, 5-10 x 3.5-9 μm. Akinetes inter¬calary, distant from heterocytes (very rarely adjacent), solitary or rarely in pairs (up to 3 in a row), slightly kidney-shaped to oval or almost cylindrical, (12) 15-24 (35) x (5) 7-12.8 (14) μm.  [details]

Harmful effect The first report of anatoxin-a in cyanobacteria goes back to 1975, in material of D. flosaquae from Canada (Carmichael et al. 1975). The structure of the toxin was clarified two years later by Devlin et al. (1977). In a study from Finland, the toxin was found as well in the cells as in the medium, during the exponential and stationary growth phases (Rapala et al. 1993). Non-toxic strains also exist (Finland: Rapala et al. 1993) [details]

Identification High variability in character of coiling, and also in akinete dimensions. Loosening of coiling can occur in cultures, rarely in poorly developed populations in nature. Gas vesicles can disappear after long-term cultivation. Numerous cited specimens with elongated cells belong to other species. Toxic strains. [details]

Remark Heterocysts, nitrogen fixing filamentous form [details]
