Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, more or less regularly and freely screw-like coiled with some irregularities in coiling, usually with 2-13 coils (spirals 0.5-2:1), clearly constricted at the cross-walls, not attenuated towards ends; the coils are 20-60 μm wide and (10) 20-60 μm high. Cells spherical, dark blue-green, with nu-merous aerotopes, (3.5) 4-8 x 6-8 (9) μm, or (5.8) 6-9 (9.5) μm in diameter; apical cells spherical, of the same shape and size as vegetative cells. Heterocytes more or less spherical to barrel-shaped, intercalary, solitary, (5.6) 6.5-10 μm in diameter. Akinetes intercalary, distant from heterocytes, solitary (rarely up to 3 together), ± spherical when young, later oval or rarely almost cylindrical with rounded ends, slightly kidney-shaped or asymmetrical, 15-20.8 (22.8) x 9-14 µm. [details]
