Description Cells round to oval, 35–47 μm in length; 24–37 μm in width. Valves with radiating rows of pores and two circles of pores, one posterior and one central. Periflagellar area wide V-shaped, composed of 10 platelets. Platelet 1 with prominent spine, as in P. micans. Valves are foveate. Two varieties of the species (genetically identical) are described, differing only by the outline of the cell. [details]

Identification This species is very closely related to P. micans from which it may be difficult to distinguish.
