Description Broad oval cells with central pyrenoid (starch ring). Smooth thecal surface with scattered pores becoming more dense towards the margin. Cells can be slightly rugose towards the plate periphery. Plate centre with fewer pores or devoid of pores. Irregular belt of more closely spaced ‘marginal’ pores. The periflagellar area is V-shaped. Seven or eight platelets. The nucleus is located posteriorly. Cells can form chains within a hyaline envelope.

Harmful effect Cells of this species from Belize were reported to produce okadaic acid and DTX2 by Faust et al. (2008) in a personal message from B. Luckas and K. Erler. Subsequent studies on European material have not demonstrated any toxins (Aligizaki et al. 2009, Pistocchi et al. 2012, David et al. 2014), and the original studies therefore need to be confirmed.
