Verbesina hispida, capitulum
Description Mexico. Nayarit. Perennial herbs with solitary or multiple stems each with a single, large capitulum growing among grasses and forbs. The plant in this photo grew on a small hill composed of dark red pumice rock near the town of El Refugio not far from the main highway Tepic-Guadalajara.When I took this photograph in 1994, the hill where this plant grew was being mined for pumice rock. I checked aerial photos of this region in 2021 and saw that this hill has been flattened and all the pumice extracted. According to McVaugh (Contr. Univ. Michigan Herb. 9, 451, 1972) this plant also grows on the hills surrounding the lake of Santa María del Oro, Nayarit. Further exploration of the area will probably identify new localities for this species in the many low, volcanic hills dotting the area. JPG file - 653.30 kB - 1 024 x 768 pixels
