Un séjour de cinq à six mois à Naples, pendant l'hiver de 1866-1867, m'a permis de me consacrer d'une manière soutenue à l'étude des Annélides du golfe. La richesse extraordinaire de cette mer faisait abonder autour de moi des matériaux en abondance trop grande pour que je pusse les utiliser tous, et je dus, dès le premier jour, me convaincre combien est erronée cette opinion de M. de Quatrefages, que les côtes volcaniques sont pauvres en Annélides. La pénurie que ce savant a constatée çà et là, tenait certainement à d'autres causes que la vulcanicité.
