Taxonomy De Laubenfels, 1930: 28 erected Gellius (?) epocheomaius with the remark 'Has no sigmas but in other respects is very like the genus Gellius'. Later (De Laubenfels, 1932: 114), after designating and describing a holotype for Halichoclona gellindra, he said that another somewhat similar specimen, which he previously (1930) called Gellius epocheoamaius, was so poor that it 'was not worth treating as a separate species because of its similarity to gellindra'. This ambiguous statement can be interpreted in at least two ways: (1) Gellius epocheomaius is the same species as Halichoclona gellindra, or (2) Gellius epocheomaius is close to but different from Halichoclona gellindra. In the first case, Halichoclona gellindra would be a junior synonym of Halichoclona epocheomaius and the description of H. gellindra would then extend to H. epocheomaius. In the second case, Gellius epocheomaius is a nomen nudum or species inquirenda, while H. gellindra stays an accepted name. Until this has been studied properly, we choose here the latter solution.
