From editor or global species database
Neotype Hooper (1996: 411) rejected the proposed synonymy (by De Laubenfels, 1936) between Spongia virgultosa Esper, 1806: 40, Pl. 66 (type locality probably West Indies), and Spongia juniperina Lamarck, 1814: 444 (type locality SW. coast of Australia, Peron & Lesueur collection, lectotype MNHNDT570 designated by Hooper (1996: 76, 426) based on comparison between Lamark's lectotype and material described by authors of the Caribbean populations of S. virgultosa (e.g. Hartman, Wiedenmayer, Van Soest), with Van Soest, Hooper & Butler (2020: 67) nominating neotype specimen BMNH 1928.11.12.50 and microscope slide BMNH 1954.2.20.67 for the latter species since there is no surviving material of Esper (1806). Morphologically at least, these are sister species in the Caribbean (C. (T.) virgultosa (Esper, 1806)) and southwest Indian Ocean (C. (T.) juniperina (Lamarck, 1814)). [details]
