Etymology In a footnote Caullery explained the genus was named for the expedition vessel H. M. S. Siboga, combined with the Greek word for thread, which in Latin is Linum i (neuter). He also wrote "Ce nom, de formation, un peu barbare, rappelle l'origine et l'aspect de l'animal, sans rien suggérer de ses affinités" [details]

Grammatical gender Siboglinum is neuter as '-linum' is a neuter noun. Almost all taxonomists subsequent to Caullery (1914) have created adjectival names that are gender-compliant neuter . The exception is S. longimanus Ivanov, 1957 (his other names are neuter). [details]
