Distribution The coordinates of the locality of the holotype are given by Santin et al. (2021) as 24°N 86°W, presumably based on ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as an approximate coordinate, but the locality given for MZS Po165 in the Strasbourg catalogue (and by Schmidt himself) is ‘Caraib. Meer’, a much larger region. It is unclear where the information ‘E of the Campache Escarpment’ comes from cited by Santin et al. under Geographic Distribution. Furthermore, Schmidt stated as also said in Santin et al. that the holotype was attached to a specimen of >i>Regadrella. He gave the very general locality Caribbean Sea for his M. elliptica, but there is more information as two specimens of Regadrella phoenix were obtained by the Blake Expedition (see Schmidt, 1880: 60), one from Barbados and one from St. Croix, both localities not in the Gulf of Mexico or close to 24°N 86°W, but within the wider Caribbean. The database of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, which contains the more complete lot of Schmidt specimens, has two specimens of Regadrella phoenix, one from Barbados collected by the Blake Exped. stat. 281, 12.9133°N 59.8083°W, March 6 1879, depth 288 fms (519 m), and the other without data. There is also a Regadrella phoenix specimen/fragment of the Blake Exped. in the USNM, from Barbados. Unfortunately, there is no Blake Expedition Melonanchora listed for the MCZ collection and not for USNM, but there is a Regadrella phoenix specimen/fragment in the Strasbourg collection, unfortunately without locality data. Although it is not certain, it is likely that the Strasbourg Melonanchora ‘elliptica’ was originally attached to the Strasbourg Regadrella. Given all this information it seems best to consider the Barbados Blake station as the most likely type locality of Schmidt’s Melonanchora ‘elliptica’ and thus of the present species.  [details]
