Additional information In studying the diversity and biogeography of the intertidal barnacle Chthamalus species in the Tropical Eastern Pacific, Chan et al. (2016) renamed Chthamalus southwardorum Pitombo and Burton, 2007 as Chthamalus alani Chan 2016. Chthamalus southwardorum was named by Pitombo and Burton (2007) in honour of “Dr A.J. Southward, for his extensive contribution to the knowledge of chthamalids and his careful collecting during the Tropical eastern Pacific Expedition” (see etymology in Pitombo and Burton, 2007). Chan et. (2016) stated “Unfortunately, the suffix -orum indicates “of men or for man (men) and woman (women) together” (ICZN, 4th edition, 1999 Article 31.1.2). Chan et al. (2016) considered C. southwardorum to be a lapsus calami in the original publication (ICZN Art. 32.5.1) and stated that the name C. southwardorum should be treated as an incorrect original spelling that should be corrected to southwardi, taking the authorship and date of Pitombo & Burton,” but since Chthamalus southwardi Pitombo & Burton, 2007 is a junior primary homonym of Chthamalus southwardi Poltaruka, 2000 and therefore an invalid name (ICZN Art 57.2), a new replacement name is required for C. southwardorum. As a result, Chan in Chan et al. (2016) renamed C. southwardorum as Chthamlaus alani, again in honour of Prof. Alan Southward, but using his first name, for his contributions to barnacle distribution, ecology and taxonomy.Newman et al. (2016) disagreed with the change of the name from C. southwardorum to C. alani, basing their objection on the ICZN code 32.5.1, which states “If there is in the original publication itself, without recourse to any external source of information, clear evidence of an inadvertent error, such as a lapsus calami or a copyist's or printer's error, it must be corrected. Incorrect transliteration or Latinization, or use of an inappropriate connecting vowel, are not to be considered inadvertent errors.” Newman et al. (2016) claimed that the name southwardorum is not a lapsus calami or misspelled, but is incorrect Latinization for honoring A.J. Southward, so this name should be retained.
According to the ICZN code 32.5.1 incorrect Latinization is not a lapsus calami, the name C. alani is not acceptable and should be changed back to C. southwardorum. [details]
