Abstract
The opossum shrimp Neomysis americana (order Mysida) originates from the Eastern Coast of North America. Through transport in the ballast water of ships, the species ended up on the Atlantic Coast of South America in the late 1960s and, from 2010, also in Western Europe. In 2012, the species was first observed in Belgian waters. It is uncertain if Neomysis americana will become invasive, as the species does not have an invasive character in South America and has become a crucial part of the local food web.
