Etymology Not stated. The subspecific epithet dubius is a Latin adjective meaning 'doubtful', and refers presumably to the doubts expressed by the author whether the single studied specimen represented the big variability of the stem species, or a new one: "It is possible that P. eximius is a very variable species with 16-31 segments bearing notosetae, uncini commencing on setiger 7-9 and three to six pairs of large nephridia. However this range of variation is wider than is usual in the genus Polycirrus and until more specimens have been studied in detail it is better to treat these larger specimens with 25-31 bundles of notosetae as a separate subspecies."
