Ecology Infaunal (Richter, 1964b), widespread in marginal marine environments along the European seaboard including the Mediterranean, northern limit Oslo Fjord, Norway, absent from the Baltic; present in lagoons from Buzzards Bay to Florida, USA; rare in the Gulf of Mexico; husbands chloroplasts (Knight and Mantoura, 1985), herbivore on diatoms (Ward et al., 2003) and cyanobacteria (Hohenegger et al., 1989); common in sediments with highly variable mud and TOC contents (Alve and Murray, 1999); salinity 0–35 (Murray, 1968b) but up to 50 in salt works (Zaninetti, 1984); molecular genetics shows it to be a single species (Langer, 2000). [details]
