Description Trichomes solitary, straight or slightly curved, motile, (1) 1.2–1.5 (2) µm wide, strongly constricted at the ± thick, hyaline translucent cross-walls or almost unconstricted, without aerotopes, not attenuated at the ends, occasionally with thin, indistinct mucilaginous envelopes or sheaths. Cells long-cylindrical, pale blue-green or olive blue-green, 2.5 to 8× longer than wide, (1.2?) 4–12 (20?) µm long; cell content homogeneous with ± distinctive chromatoplasma. Apical cells rounded, without aerotopes. From Komárek and Anagnostidis 1999. [details]

Apical cells rounded, without aerotopes. From Komárek and Anagnostidis 1999. [details]

Environment Freshwater, benthic on mud in ponds, pools, artificial reservoirs and lakes, later often tychoplanktic and planktic (together with other euplanktic species), often in polluted waters; probably distributed worldwide in temperate and tropical zones (various types ?); records with trichomes unconstricted at cross-walls and from other biotopes (within the mucilage of other algae, in thermal springs, e.g., in Copeland 1936, Emoto & Yoneda 1940) probably belong to other species.
From Komarek and Anagnostidis 1999. [details]

Harmful effect Anatoxin‐an according to Osswald et al. 2009 (Portugal). Confirmed on isolated strains. [details]
